Cataracts - A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. It can be compared to a window that is "fogged" with steam. Common symptoms of cataracts are painless blurring of vision, glare or light sensitivity, frequent prescription changes, double vision in one eye, dimness of lights, poor night vision and fading of colors. The most common type of cataract is related to age. Other causes can include: inherited conditions, medical problems such as diabetes, injury to the eye, medications such as steroids and long term unprotected exposure to sunlight. Although it is a common misconception, lasers are not used to remove cataracts, only conventional surgery can currently remove a cataract initially. Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under a local anesthetic. After surgery, you may return almost immediately to all but the most strenuous activities. Cataracts are a common cause of poor vision, particularly for the elderly, but they are treatable. A thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist can detect the presence and extent of cataracts or any other conditions that may be causing blurred vision or discomfort.
