Thomas J. Clinch, M.D.

Thomas J. Clinch, M.D., joined Kearney Eye Institute in 2002. Dr. Clinch graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He completed his internship at the Naval Medical Center in Virginia and did his ophthalmology residency at Ohio State University where he served as Chief Resident. While in the U.S. Navy he completed specialty training in undersea and hyperbaric medicine in addition to diving medicine. Dr. Clinch is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Nebraska Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Clinch and has wife have three sons and one daughter.

Jerry Vaughan, O.D.

Jerry Vaughan, O.D., joined Kearney Eye Institute in 2008. He is a graduate of Kearney State College and the Illinois College of Optometry. In 1977 Dr. Vaughan founded Prairie Eye Care Center in Broken Bow, Nebraska, and was one of the first optometrists in the nation to become board certified by the American Board of Optometry in 2012. Dr. Vaughan is a dry eye specialist and a member of the Ocular Surface Society of Optometry. He performs SEE TO LEARN visual assessments for pre-school children in addition to Visual Efficiency Perception testing for school age students. Dr. Vaughan has been the recipient of four Presidential Citations for outstanding contributions to Nebraska Optometry, twice been named Nebraska Optometrist of the Year, and received the Nebraska Optometric Association’s Distinguished Service Award. He served on the Nebraska Department of Health/CDC Diabetes Intervention Team, is a past president of Nebraska Optometric Association, served on the North Central States Optometric Cabinet, was chairman of optometric education for the North Central States Optometric Council, chaired the Nebraska Optometric Association’s Government Relations Committee for three years, has served as a board member of the Nebraska Department of Rehabilitation of Visually Impaired, served for nine years on the Nebraska State Board of Health and chaired its Credential Review Committee for four years. Dr. Vaughan and his wife have three sons.

Michael R. Feilmeier, M.D.

Michael R. Feilmeier, M.D., of Midwest Eye Care in Omaha holds a monthly clinic at the Kearney Eye Institute in Kearney. Dr. Feilmeier is a specialist in corneal transplantation, refractive and cataract surgery and diseases of the cornea and anterior segment with Midwest Eye Care in Omaha. A native of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Dr. Feilmeier received a bachelor of science degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. He earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha. Dr. Feilmeier completed an internship in internal medicine at the University of California San Diego and his ophthalmology residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. He completed his formal training with a fellowship in cornea, anterior segment and international ophthalmology at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. During his residency and fellowship, Dr. Feilmeier provided care and trained eye surgeons in Haiti, India, Nepal, the Dominican Republic, and Ghana. Dr. Feilmeier is board eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Donald P. Sauberan, M.D.

Donald P. Sauberan, M.D., of Eye Surgical Associates in Lincoln holds a monthly clinic at the Kearney Eye Institute in Kearney. Specializing in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus, Dr. Sauberan is board certified and a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his Ophthalmology Residency in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Sauberan then served as general ophthalmologist at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE, and also served in the United States Air Force as a General Medical Officer at Davis-Monthan AFB n Tucson, AZ. He then completed his Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics in Kansas City, MO. In 2009, Dr. Sauberan was selected to the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG). Dr. Sauberan is the only pediatric ophthalmologist in Nebraska to be selected for this program. The Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) is a collaborative network dedicated to facilitating multicenter clinical research in strabismus, amblyopia and other eye disorders that affect children. Dr. Sauberan strives to achieve compassionate, quality care through a strong interaction with parents. He believes that the challenges of pediatric ophthalmology involve not only treating the patient, but ensuring that the parents are on-board as well. Time spent with them answering questions and explaining things can often mean the difference between success and failure.

Daniel A. Chruscicki, M.D.

Daniel A. Chruscicki, M.D., of Eye Surgical Associates in Lincoln holds a monthly clinic at the Kearney Eye Institute in Kearney. Dr. Chruscicki is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in Vitreoretinal surgery and the treatment of retinal and macular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine on Long island, N.Y. and also completed his Internal Medicine Internship at Stony Brook Hospital on Long Island. Dr. Chruscicki went on to residency in Ophthalmology at the prestigious Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, his last year serving as chief resident. He completed a surgically intensive fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Chruscicki is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retinal Specialists, Nebraska Medical Association, Nebraska Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and Lancaster County Medical Society.

Matthew H. Wood, M.D.

Matthew H. Wood, M.D., of Eye Surgical Associates in Lincoln holds a monthly clinic at the Kearney Eye Institute in Kearney. He is a native of Lincoln, is board certified and specializes in diseases of the Retina and Vitreous. Dr. Wood received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Virginia Health System. He then specialized in Retina and Vitreous with a fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Wood serves as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and a principal investigator performing clinical research in diseases of the retina and vitreous. He is a third generation ophthalmologist, following his father Larry and grandfather Maynard in practice in Nebraska. Dr. Wood is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, Nebraska Medical Association, Lancaster County Medical Society, the Nebraska Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

David A. Pan, M.D.

David A. Pan, M.D., of Eye Surgical Associates in Lincoln holds a monthly clinic at the Kearney Eye Institute in Kearney. Dr. Pan graduated from Seattle University Magna Cum Laude. He received his M.D. degree from Drexel University College of Medicine with Honors. Dr. Pan completed his preliminary internship in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine Queens Hospital Center. He then completed his ophthalmology residency training at St. Vincent’s Hospital of New York Medical College and the prestigious Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School. After residency, he stayed at Harvard to complete a Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship training in the most advanced techniques in retinal surgery. Dr. Pan specializes in vitreoretinal surgery and the treatment of retinal and macular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Pan also graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He has performed in numerous benefit concerts raising thousands of dollars.

Brandon Blair, O.D.

Brandon Blair, O.D., of Professional Eyecare in Ord specializes in helping people with low or reduced vision regain their visual independence. Dr. Blair does this by maximizing the patient’s ability to use their remaining vision to their fullest extent. Dr. Blair conducts a thorough low vision evaluation to determine the patient’s visual needs and the best way to meet those needs. During this evaluation he demonstrates devices that will help the patient regain their visual independence. Following his evaluation, Dr. Blair discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the low vision devices that work best for the patient. By doing so, the patient can make an educated decision about which devices will help them regain their visual independence. Once a patient has decided which device or devices will best enhance their ability to function, Dr. Blair trains them on the proper use and care for the device(s). This helps reduce the patient’s frustration while learning to use their vision in a different way.

Many eye conditions, as well as general health issues, can cause low or reduced vision. Some of these conditions include macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and retinitis pigmentosa. Dr. Blair has worked with numerous patients with each of these conditions. He understands the hurdles that each of these vision conditions creates. He also has experience with the tools and technology that can help patients overcome these hurdles. John C. Welch, M.D.

John C. Welch, M.D., of The Retina Center in Hastings holds weekly clinics at the Kearney Eye Institute in Kearney. After graduating from Hastings Senior High School, he was a National Merit Scholar and Four-Year Regent Scholar at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Welch graduated Cum Laude from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha. His residency in Internal Medicine was done at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston MA, his residency in Ophthalmology was done at State University of New York in Syracuse, NY, and his fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease, Surgery, and Ocular Tumors was done at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Welch is board certified and an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Steve Shefte, M.D.

Steve Shefte, M.D., joined Kearney Eye in 1989. Dr. Shefte was instrumental in expanding the Eye Bank for cornea transplants in Greater Nebraska. He died in 1998.

Royal Jester, M.D.

Royal Jester, M.D. came to Kearney in 1958 and later founded our practice. Dr. Jester opened Kearney Eye Associates in 1967 on Avenue A. In October 1995, Kearney Eye Associates became Kearney Eye Institute and moved to its current building on 39th Street in Kearney. Dr. Jester retired in 2002.

Linda Blakely, M.D.

Linda Blakely, M.D., joined Kearney Eye in 1994. After graduating from the University of Kansas with distinction in Microbiology and the highest distinction in Medical Technology she got her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She completed her Residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. Dr. Blakely began performing LASIK in 1999, is a Laser Vision Gold Surgeon and is certified as an Advanced Custom Vue LASIK surgeon making Kearney Eye one of the premier laser vision correction providers in Central Nebraska. In 2010 Dr. Blakely added many cosmetic/aesthetic services and has successfully completed certification for Botox, Juvederm, Thermage, and Fraxel laser procedures. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Nebraska Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, obtaining her recertification in 2005. Dr. Blakely and her husband have three daughters.

Jan V. Jensen, M.D.

Jan Jensen, M.D., joined us in 1976 and continues to see patients on a part-time basis. Dr. Jensen obtained his pre-medical education at Nebraska Wesleyan University and received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine where he performed his internship and residency. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Nebraska Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Jensen and his wife have one daughter.
